Akupara – I.
I’m 5 sonnets into writing a cycle of 8 that will form a the basis of a performance for a group of year 4 children (aged 8/9). Here’s the first in the cycle (which is also reprised at the end) as a taster:
Is there a whole world lain upon my shell,
Or just the press of water, down so deep?
Though thoughtless waves drag my children to sleep,
While flippers slice through water, all is well.
Now listen close to hear these wise fins speak
Of endless journeys deep in endless seas,
Of voyages ruled by the moon, the breeze,
Of currents rode by bodies green and sleek.
Tween sandy floor and brightly burning sun
Each traveller goes wide and deep and far.
From tiny egg to noble gliding one,
They navigate this wide blue mandala.
So life, an everlasting wheel, rolls on
One generation come, another gone.
